घरात अठराविश्‍व दारिद्य्र, आई-वडील मोलमजुरी करणारे...अशा परिस्थितीत काहीतरी करून दाखविण्याच्या जिद्दीने व त्यासाठी घेतलेल्या कष्टांतून त्यांनी कोट्यवधींचे साम्राज्य निर्माण केले. वेटर, वायरमन ते उद्योजक अशी ओळख असलेल्या रामदास माने यांनी "माने ग्रुप ऑफ कंपनीज'च्या माध्यमातून जगभरात आपली ओळख निर्माण केली व थर्माकोलच्या उद्योगात नाव कमावले

"ना नफा, ना तोटा' या तत्त्वावर स्वस्त स्वच्छतागृह तयार करणाऱ्या व थर्माकोलच्या व्यवसायात अग्रगण्य असलेल्या माने यांच्या देशासह परदेशात सहा कंपन्या आहेत. मुख्यतः "माने ग्रुप ऑफ कंपनीज'चे काम भोसरी व इंदापूरमधील शाखांमधून चालते. या माध्यमातून माने यांनी संयुक्त अरब अमिरातीतील मस्कत येथील राजासमध्ये जगातील सर्वांत मोठा थर्माकोल निर्मितीचा प्रकल्प उभा करून दिला व त्याची नोंद "लिम्का बुक ऑफ वर्ल्ड रेकॉर्ड'नेही घेतली. 

माने हे मूळचे सातारा जिल्ह्यातील लोधवडे गावचे. आई-वडिलांनी मोलमजुरी करून माने यांना दहावीपर्यंतचे शिक्षण दिले. त्यांची आई त्यांना शाळेत सोडण्यासाठी दररोज 28 किलोमीटर पायी प्रवास करीत असे. दहावीत चांगल्या गुणांनी उत्तीर्ण झाल्यानंतर माने यांनी आजीकडून 20 रुपये उसने घेत सातारा येथील आयटीआयमध्ये वायरमनच्या दोन वर्षाच्या अभ्यासक्रमाला प्रवेश घेतला. दिवसा शिक्षण, रात्री एसटी स्टॅंडवर मुक्काम करत एका हॉटेलमध्ये त्यांनी साडेतीन रुपयांच्या पगारावर वेटरचे काम केले. वायरमनच्या अभ्यासक्रमात ते प्रथम क्रमांकाने उत्तीर्ण झाले. त्यानंतर भोसरीतील महिंद्रा सिंटर्ड, पिंपरीतील फिनोलेक्‍स कंपनीत मेंटेनन्स व्यवस्थापक म्हणून काम बघितले. के. के. नाग कंपनीतील व्यवस्थापकपदाचा राजीनामा दिल्यानंतर साठविलेल्या पाच लाखांमध्ये त्यांनी एमआयडीसीत जागा घेतली व "माने इलेक्‍ट्रीकल्स' ही पहिली कंपनी सुरू केली. माने यांना देश व राज्य पातळीवरील 125 पुरस्कारांनी सन्मानित केले आहे. दरम्यान, ग्रामस्वच्छता अभियानात लोधवडे गावाला 2007 मध्ये प्रथम क्रमांक मिळविण्यासाठी 25 पैकी दोन स्वच्छतागृहे आवश्‍यक होती. तीन दिवसांमध्ये थर्माकोलवर सिमेंट कॉंक्रिट करून दोन स्वच्छतागृहे बनविण्याचे तंत्र माने यांनी विकसित केले. - 23 हजार स्वच्छतागृहांची निर्मिती  - 45 देशांमध्ये 128 थर्माकोल निर्मिती प्रकल्पांची उभारणी  - 352 प्रकल्पांसाठी मशिनरी निर्यात  यातून आपण काय घेणार?  - कोणत्याही कामाला कमी लेखू नका, त्यातूनच यशाचा मार्ग सापडतो.  - आपल्या कामात नावीन्य शोधा व काळानुसार स्वतःला बदलत राहा.

At 58, Ramdas Mansingh Mane, CMD of Pune based Mane Group of Companies, helms an empire that has an annual turnover of around Rs 35 crore.

Employing close to 10,000 people, he manufactures and exports Expandable Polystyrene (EPS) thermocol and thermocol machinery. Around 80 per cent of the thermocol machines in India are supplied by his company.

But the irony is that there was a time when his biggest ambition was to score a job of a peon in the local school.

“I was good at studies but had no guidance as to what to do in life,” shares Ramdas with a laugh. “So I applied for a peon’s job after completing my SSC!”

Born in a small village, Lodhawade, in Satara, Maharashtra, his journey has been one of steady growth. After completing his schooling at local schools in Satara, he wanted to study more but had no financial support.

“I used to work at farms and get bothered by the heat – this is why I wanted the peon job because the government school had electricity and there was a fan,” says Ramdas.

In 1975, after his SSC, he went to Janardhan Lohar, an elder in the village, to try and get the peon job but Lohar advised him to train as a wireman instead.

“He told me the whole village was going to get electricity soon and a wireman course could prove beneficial,” recalls Ramdas. “I remember those days when we got electricity for the first time… villagers were fascinated at how with one switch a bulb lights up…!”

He applied to Satara Industrial Training Institute for wireman training and got admission easily. It was far from his village and he had no money and no place to stay so, for the first night of his course, he stayed at the state transport bus stand near the college.
Then I heard that Mr Shetty, who owned the canteen at the bus stand, was looking for a helper and I got hired at Rs 4 per month and started staying there,” he shares. “I used to work from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. and then attend college at 7 a.m.”

For seven years, he continued to work for Mahindra and simultaneously did an evening course from IME (Institution of Mechanical Engineers).

In 1984, he married Shobha and built a house for them to stay in Pune's Chakrapani Vasahat where he bought a 2,000 sq ft land for Rs 30,000. A year after this, he took up a job with Finolex Pipe Pvt Ltd as a maintenance engineer.
