Here is difference between Security group and mail enabled security group

Security Group

# Role Based Admin Permisson
# Use in SharePoint/OneDrive restriction and permissions

Mail Enabled Security Group

# Exchange Mailbox
# Functions like Distribution list
# Use in SharePoint/OneDrive restriction and permissions

Point to remember : Approval to join the group does not work with Security Group
