This is the owl box we hung up. The same night we put it up, barn owls inspected the box and moved in the next day. In March 2026 they had 7 eggs and the hatching began end of March.
Sadly Owl dad Friedel disappeared mid April, sweet barn owl mom was left alone with her owlets. Alma was so confused she just waited inside the box with her little ones. On the 2nd days they all got restless and hungry and sadly the smallest owlet didn't make it.

So we stepped in to avoid the entire clutch would die.
Alma does what she can but as a single mom she can barely bring around enough prey. Especially with the owlets growing so fast.
At the same time great horned owl Athena at the Austin LBJ Wildflower Center lost her mate too. Sweet Athena also lost one of her two owlets.
The only reason Alma can hunt and have her owlets saver than Athena is the box. It protects the babies from predators and the unusual rainy and cold CTX nights.

In cooperation with our local raptor / wildlife rehabber we are now substituting Alma and her little family.

Once a day we now toss feeder mice up there.

We especially appreciate notes of Alma sightings! For 2 nights she disappeared before, making us worried sick that the lil owlets had lost their mom too.

But she makes fairly regular appearances and with less rain at night she brings home more prey.
