The Only Air Base on Earth Built to Survive a Nuclear Blast — And China Wants the Blueprint

An underground air base built to survive a 20-kiloton nuclear strike sits abandoned in the mountains between Croatia and Bosnia — and China is now copying its design for its own nuclear-proof military bases. The Željava Air Base, known as Object 505, was Yugoslavia's most secret Cold War project: a facility carved deep into a mountain with three tunnel entrances, underground hangars for 58 fighter jets, a nuclear reactor, fuel reserves, and living quarters for 1,000 personnel — all designed to keep flying after a direct nuclear hit.

In 1992, as Yugoslavia collapsed, the retreating Yugoslav People's Army destroyed Željava from the inside with 56 tons of explosives — but the mountain structure survived. The concrete walls, blast doors, and tunnel engineering were so overbuilt that the demolition only damaged the interior. Today, the shell of the base still stands, and its design principles — deep-buried hangars, multi-exit tunnel systems, and nuclear-hardened infrastructure — are now being replicated in China's underground military bases, including the reported "Underground Great Wall" tunnel network.
