USS Mississippi (BB-41) was a New Mexico-class battleship commissioned in December 1917, twelve 14-inch guns in four triple turrets, and her Turret No. 2 acquired one of the worst reputations of any gun mount in the United States Navy. On June 12, 1924, during gunnery practice off San Pedro, California, a powder bag flareback in Turret 2 ignited the powder train and killed 48 men, most of them burned alive in the handling room and gun house. The Navy investigated, rewrote handling procedures, and put her back into service. Nineteen years later, on November 20, 1943, during the shore bombardment of Makin Atoll in the Gilbert Islands, the same turret suffered an almost identical flareback during a salvo and killed 43 more men. The ship kept firing with her three remaining turrets. Turret No. 2 had killed 91 sailors in two accidents on the same battleship.
