She died in 1964 — he visited her grave every month for 34 years #GeorgeBurns #love #devotion

George Burns met Gracie Allen in a vaudeville theater in New Jersey in 1922. He was 26, a struggling comedian. She was 27, an Irish-Catholic girl from San Francisco. He told her he had a routine but no partner. She took the job.

They married on January 7, 1926.

She was the comic. He was the straight man who fed her the lines. For 38 years they shared the stage. Radio. Then "The Burns and Allen Show" on CBS from 1950 to 1958. They adopted two children, Sandy and Ronnie.

In 1958, Gracie retired. Her heart was failing.

She died of a heart attack on August 27, 1964, at home in Beverly Hills. She was 69. George was beside her.

He could not perform alone for two years.

He visited her grave at Forest Lawn every month after. For 34 years. He returned to acting in 1975 and won the Oscar at 80.

He died on March 9, 1996, at 100. He was buried beside her.

Was she his wife — or the only audience he never stopped writing for?
