DS32026B26 | Coding Plant Behaviour: A multi stimulus growth using sensors & Arduino | C2 | C0250

Plants continuously respond to their environment through subtle physiological and growth-related changes. Inspired by the pioneering work of Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose, this investigatory project explores how multiple controlled external stimuli influence plant growth using a low-cost Arduino-based digital crescograph. The study examines the combined effects of sound frequency, monochromatic light exposure, infrared radiation–induced stress, and pulsed light frequency on plant growth behaviour.
An experimental setup was designed using Arduino microcontrollers, ultrasonic distance sensors, temperature sensors, LEDs of specific wavelengths, a controlled sound source, and an infrared emitter. The digital crescograph continuously recorded minute changes in plant growth rate under different stimulus conditions. Plants will be exposed individually to sound waves of varying frequencies, single-color light sources, pulsed light cycles, and controlled infrared radiation to simulate mild thermal stress. Growth rate, recovery time, and response patterns will be measured and compared against control plants grown under normal conditions.
The collected data will be analysed to identify trends in growth enhancement, inhibition, and stress response. Preliminary observations indicate that certain sound frequencies and pulsed light patterns promote growth, while excessive infrared exposure induces measurable stress responses. This project demonstrates how classical plant behavioural concepts can be revisited using modern electronics, offering insights into plant sensitivity and adaptive behaviour. The study highlights the potential of low-cost sensor-based tools for plant research and sustainable agricultural applications.
