IORE Train - Extreme rail transport 68 cars

With relatively short distances to the shipping ports, LKAB's rail transport provide clear competitive advantages in terms of both cost-effectiveness and sustainability. With one of the world's strongest locomotives, the IORE, which has been specially designed for extremely heavy transport operations, a single train can transport as much as 6,800 tonnes of iron ore products.

With a traction of 1,200 kilonewtons, the IORE locomotive is the world's strongest locomotive. Thanks to the locomotive's asynchronous engine, kinetic energy is converted into electricity when the trains perform engine braking. This allows more or less energy-neutral operation, as the locomotive has the ability to feed back energy.

LKAB has 17 IORE locomotives in operation, using the Ore Railway all year round. The impressive trains are 750 metres long, have 68 cars and a load capacity of 100 tonnes per car.

Every day, 10 trains depart to Port of Narvik and 5 to Port of Luleå. Additives for the refinement process are shipped on the return journey, ensuring that the logistics system is utilised as sustainably and efficiently as possible.
