Tobacoo (Nicotiana Tabacum) | Nicotine poisoning | UGC NET Forensic science notes

Nicotine poisoning refers to the toxic effects of consuming nicotine, a chemical in all tobacco products. A recent increase in poisonings is due to liquid nicotine, a product in the popular e-cigarette.
Tobacco is the common name of several plants in the genus Nicotiana of the family Solanaceae.
All parts of the plant are poisonous, except the ripe seeds.
Nicotine is a dangerous substance extracted from tobacco leaves, and when it is ingested in excessive amounts, it can lead to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.
Nicotine poisoning symptoms result from exposure to normal cigarettes or tobacco leaves.
Leaves contain toxic alkaloids like nicotine, anabasine, nornicotine and lobeline (in Indian tobacco).
