Zero-emmision data centers remain elusive

Asked whether a large data center can be run solely off of wind and solar power, Nabeel Mahmood, a longtime data center executive and co-founder of Nomad Futurist Foundation, says, "Not today."

If "leveraged in collaboration with the right storage device," wind, solar and other renewable energy sources like hydrogen can get closer to zero-emission goals, Mahmood tells Cool Vector.

Brandon Smith, VP of Global Sales and Product at ZincFive, adds that sheer scale becomes a challenge for fully renewable operations. "When we're talking about gigawatt campuses, I think it gets a lot more difficult to run that facility off of wind or solar," he says.
