30 days 30 TEF Tips - Part 10
Tip 10: If you make a mistake while speaking, correct yourself naturally and continue
confidently.
One small mistake in TEF speaking does NOT mean your answer is ruined. What matters is
how you handle it.
Many students panic, freeze, or stop speaking completely after making a grammatical mistake.
And that hurts their fluency score more than the mistake itself.
Instead, correct yourself naturally and continue speaking. Let’s look at one example: “Je suis
allé… euh pardon, je voulais dire… je vais aller au Canada l’année prochaine.
”
Or “J’ai 25 ans… pardon, 26 ans.
”
This shows the examiner that you can recognise your mistakes, you are actively thinking in
French, and you can continue communicating without freezing.
And that is exactly what strong speakers do in real conversations. Remember, self-correction is
completely normal in French. Silence and panic are much more dangerous during the exam.
So if you make a mistake: Correct it calmly, keep speaking, and move forward confidently.
