🕯️ In this Japanese urban legend, a kind country physician named Koan walked the mountain paths of Awa (modern Tokushima), bowing to grieving families and pocketing their coins. But the herbal medicine in his kusuribako wasn't medicine at all — it was poison, glamoured into a remedy by something that was never human. Only when a hunter glimpsed a striped tail slipping beneath his robes did the village understand what had been smiling at their bedsides.

This is one of Shikoku's darkest bake-danuki kaidan: a shape-shifting yokai with no exorcism, no punishment, no ending. Koan-danuki simply walked away into the cedar fog — and the legend says he is still walking.
