A major diplomatic breakthrough has emerged after US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire with Iran following a request from Pakistan. The ceasefire will remain in place until talks are completed, while the blockade of Iranian ports will continue.
In an official statement, President Trump said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir asked for attacks to stop until Iran’s leadership presents unified proposals.
Trump also claimed Iran is facing a severe financial crisis, saying the blockade is causing losses of nearly $500 million per day. He added that Iran urgently wants the Strait of Hormuz reopened.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also met Iran’s Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam to discuss the regional situation and ongoing peace efforts.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei said diplomacy remains a tool to protect national interests and security, adding that Tehran will act whenever diplomacy better serves those interests.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has defeated enemy plots and objectives.
However, advisers to Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf dismissed Trump’s ceasefire extension as a tactic to gain time for a surprise attack.
Iranian forces also seized two ships and transferred them to the Iranian coast. Reports say one vessel may be linked to Israel. Authorities stated the ships were detained for disrupting navigation systems and endangering safety in the Strait of Hormuz.
China again called for resolving the crisis through diplomacy, while the United Kingdom urged renewed talks and the full reopening of Hormuz without restrictions or tolls.
The United Nations Secretary-General welcomed the ceasefire extension and praised Pakistan’s efforts toward a lasting solution.
Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar also met the British High Commissioner to discuss peaceful conflict resolution through dialogue.
Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed faster progress on electric vehicles in Pakistan to reduce fuel imports, improve environmental protection, and strengthen energy security.
The European Union Energy Commissioner warned that the impact of the Middle East conflict on energy prices could last for years.
