The F-105 in the Vietnam War: A Fighter Pilot's First-Hand Account of Combat in the Thud

Col. John C. Wright, USAF (ret), gives a presentation of his Vietnam War experiences in the Republic F-105 to the 78th Fighter Squadron in October 1997. From 1966 to 1970, he flew the F-105 while assigned to the 12th Tactical Fighter Squadron (Kadena AB, Okinawa), the 67th TFS (Kadena AB), the 354th TFS (Takhli AB, Thailand), and the 357th TFS (Takhli AB). He flew 140 combat missions in the Thud in Southeast Asia while deployed to Takhli.

During a 24-year career as an Air Force pilot, Col. Wright primarily flew the F-84, B-47, B-58, F-105, and B-52, but he was also checked in many other military aircraft. Prior to his commissioning in 1951, Col. Wright served in the Texas Air National Guard. After his retirement in 1975, he spent 17 years running the Air Force Junior ROTC unit at Cooper High School in Abilene, Texas.
