OK, come on. At number five is Beneteau Evasion 32. This boat is well-known in North America for its classic ketch rig and full long keel. Those features give it a beautiful simplicity and excellent balance underway.
Even as a motorsailer, it sails surprisingly well. With 484 square feet of sail area and nearly 12,700 pounds of displacement, it moves steadily with good momentum — a real godsend for solo sailors. It doesn’t get thrown around or heel suddenly, so you have time to handle lines without stress.
Many owners love how the long keel tracks so well that you can actually leave the helm for a few minutes to grab a coffee or use the head. At over 55, that steady, forgiving nature is worth its weight in gold.
It also has a smart galley-up layout right next to the pilothouse, so everything is on one level, much easier on the knees and safer. Powered by a solid Volvo Penta 30 or 55 hp engine, it gives you confidence when the wind drops or the current gets tough.
Price-wise, well-equipped examples are selling for $15,000 to $25,000. Sure, some might worry it’s a money pit, but it doesn’t have to be. A good survey costs $500 to 2,000, and regular hull and rig checks help you avoid big repair bills. Annual maintenance is typically up to 20% of its value, pretty normal. Best of all, well-maintained ones hold up to 80% of their value when you sell.

At number 4, we have the LM 27, one of the most successful small motorsailers in Europe.
This Danish design is perfect for solo sailors who don’t want to cancel plans just because of bad weather. Its long keel has a shallow draft of only 3 feet 1 inch, letting you sneak into shallow creeks, rivers, and bays that many bigger or deeper boats can’t reach. That means easier access to shore services and calmer, more protected anchorages with less swell, so you sleep much better at night.
One of my favorite features is the dual steering system. On nice days, you can use the tiller in the cockpit to enjoy the breeze and feel the boat directly. When it rains or gets cold, you simply move inside the wheelhouse, stay warm and dry, and steer from the wheel. The Bukh or Volvo Penta 20 to 36 hp diesel is more than adequate for relaxed motoring.
Of course, the LM 27 is an older design, first launched in 1972. Over time, the aluminum windows in the wheelhouse often leak as the sealant dries out.
Fortunately, the active LM Owners community offers great advice that saves owners a lot of money. You can usually fix the windows with new rubber seals and acrylic for under £200, or less than $300. Rigging replacement costs around £875 to £1,100.
