Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre | Snobs Creek Hatchery
The Victorian Fisheries Authority’s Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre is now open at the Snobs Creek Fish Hatchery near Eildon, Victoria - a world-class facility dedicated to bringing one of Australia’s most threatened native fish species back from the brink.
Once widespread across the south-eastern Murray–Darling Basin, the Macquarie perch (Macquaria australasica) has suffered dramatic population declines and is now considered endangered. Today, only a handful of wild populations remain.
This new recovery centre will play a crucial role in reversing that decline. Using advanced hatchery technology and specialised aquaculture systems, the facility aims to produce up to 500,000 Macquarie perch fingerlings each year for release into waters across Victoria, helping rebuild wild populations.
The centre will also produce up to 500,000 trout cod each year, helping recover another of Victoria's most precious and iconic native species.
The Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre forms part of the Victorian Government’s Go Fishing and Boating Victoria plan.
In this video, we take you inside the new facility to see:
• How hatchery teams breed and rear endangered native fish
• The cutting-edge systems used to replicate natural conditions
• Why Macquarie perch are so important to Australia’s freshwater ecosystems
• How stocking programs are helping rebuild fisheries for future generations
Protecting and restoring native fish like the Macquarie perch is a long-term effort involving scientists, hatchery experts, anglers, researchers and communities across the Murray–Darling Basin.
