What US Marines Said When They Finally Met an SAS Sniper in Helmand

In September 2010, sixteen US Marines were seconds away from walking into an IED field in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. A single voice stopped them cold calm, flat, Northern English. Nobody on the patrol knew who it was or where it came from.

When they finally found the man behind that voice, he was standing in a field they'd been watching for two hours. He'd been lying in a shallow depression twenty metres away the entire time. They'd looked directly at that ground. They'd seen nothing.

This is the story of what those Marines said when they finally came face to face with an SAS sniper in Helmand and why they said there was no word in their vocabulary for what they had just witnessed.
