a lovely girl from my high school just messaged me about how she spent winter break crying over her first B... in Spanish 4H. Her Spanish teacher encouraged her to reach out to me, her own student from ages ago... because I went through the exact same thing!

I visited my high school recently and my Spanish teacher Dr. Lyons told me that she tells the story of how she gave me a B all those years ago... and yet I got into all 8 Ivy Leagues and every college I applied to. She tells this story about me to her students to reassure them that a B is not the end of the world; and in fact, argues that the B humanized me in the eyes of the college (there is growth and improvement!) and also shows that our high school doesn't just hand out Easy A's. I love that Dr. Lyons shares that story with current students! I completely empathize with the desire to get all A's... but sometimes that's just not realistic! So I'm here to tell you today that it's okay if your grades aren't perfect. Colleges are not looking for perfect. They're looking for your best. And if your best is a B this semester, so be it! As long as you buckle down and constantly seek to improve your knowledge, skillsets, and learning methods, a B is NOT going to stop you from getting into your dream school.
