Salty Dog Blues Wth Earl Scruggs & The Morris Brothers Singing At Their Body Shop
You are watching The Morris Brothers filmed in 1972. I was making a 90 minute documentary film about the iconic banjo picker Earl Scruggs. He took me to various groups that he had played with including The Morris Brothers. They were wonderful characters, great musicians and so kind to me and my crew when we showed up at their body shop to film them picking a few tunes with Earl Scruggs and his son Randy.
The Morris Brothers, Zeke and Wiley were significant figures in the early days of country and bluegrass music. They became popular in the 1930s and continued to play together until the 1970s. They started recording in 1935. They popular on the radio & between 1938 and 1939 they made 36! recordings for RCA Victor.
After World War II, The Morris Brothers retired from music and opened an auto repair business which is the shop that I filmed them at back in 1972. Well known musicians who have played with The Morris Brothers include: Carroll Best, Hoke Jenkins, Red Rector, Red Smiley, Don Reno, Benny Sims and Earl Scruggs
I love watching this moment as I did when I first filmed it. I do not know what it is about country/bluegrass/mountain/old time music that so appeals to me. If I am in a bad mood or having a tough day, it lightens it. If I am feeling really wonderful and floating through life, it becomes even more wonderful when I hear those songs, backed up by flat picking guitars and 5 string banjos. And when you are lucky enough as I was to go to the North Carolina mountains, the southern Appalachians, into those small hollers with the mountains all around, and just sit down and listen.
"Salty Dog Blues" is a traditional blues song that has been recorded by many different artists over the years. It is a blues standard that has been recorded by numerous artists including Flatt & Scruggs, Lead Belly, Elvis Presley and the Allman Brothers Band. The song is in a blues form with lyrics that tell the story of a man who has been cheated on by his lover and is feeling down and depressed as a result. The song has a catchy, upbeat melody and has been covered by a wide range of artists, making it a well-known and enduring classic of the blues genre.
The term "salty dog" has roots in early 20th-century American slang with various meanings, but in the context of the song, it usually refers to an experienced sailor or an otherwise worldly or experienced person.
Although it is a traditional song it has been performed in both bluegrass and old-time (referred to as "mountain music") styles. The song itself is not exclusive to either genre but can be adapted to fit different musical styles.
Many commentators on clips from my film debate whether this is bluegrass music, or mountain music. While both genres share similar roots and often use similar instruments, bluegrass tends to be more complex and virtuosic, while old-time music often focuses more on communal playing and dance accompaniment.
Bluegrass Music: Originating in the 1940s, bluegrass is characterized by a specific instrumentation that usually includes banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass. The genre was popularized by Bill Monroe and his band, the Blue Grass Boys. Bluegrass music tends to feature complex arrangements, high-energy performances, and a high level of technical proficiency. It also often includes tight vocal harmonies.
Mountain Music (Old-Time Music): This is a genre of North American folk music, and it predates bluegrass. It's often associated with the Appalachian region, though its roots spread to many rural areas of the South and Midwest. The music is often played on acoustic instruments, such as the fiddle, banjo, and guitar, but the arrangements tend to be less complex than in bluegrass, often focusing on a single melody line that all instruments play together. Dancing is a major component of old-time music culture, with many tunes designed to accompany square dances and clogging.
