In the meantime, here's a letter she wrote to her future Host Family...

Dear (future) Host Family,
My name is Yu (pronounced "you"). I am 15 years old (she'll be 16 by the time she starts school here in the U.S.) and a first-year high school student living in Yokohama (Kanagawa Prefecture, next to Tokyo). I have decided to do an exchange program and I am looking forward to studying abroad for a year. I hope to share time with you all and become a new member of your family. I like books because I can learn many things and experience a new world. During the exchange program, I am excited not only to experience the world of books, but also to actually experience a new world and exchange ideas with people from different backgrounds. I have the impression that the United States is a free country and that Americans are open-minded. I would enjoy how I really feel about it. So far, I have lived in Yokohama, a beautiful port town with many hills, surrounded by a delightful family (my parents, brother, and grandparents live nearby) and wonderful friends. My parents have always been supporting me in what I want to do. Being free to do what I want to do means that I have to take responsibility for things. That is always in my mind. Also, my grandparents are very kind. I love hearing about my grandparents' history and what they went through. They tell me stories about when my grandparents were young, when my parents were young, and they teach me about traditional Japanese customs. And even though I have changed schools, I have always been blessed with warm friends. In junior high school, I joined the dance club. It was hard work because I had to check my dancing not only at school but also at home. But all the while, I was blessed with wonderful friends. That was an asset for me. Since I grew up in such a good environment, studying in the U.S. will be a culture shock for me, but I would like to broaden my outlook and deepen my thoughts by feeling it for myself. I hope that this will have a great impact on my future. I was a member of the dance club at school, so I think I like music and rhythm. I took piano lessons for eight years, and my mother often tells me that I hum when I am in a good mood. Music is what relaxes me. I am not yet confident in my English conversation skills, but I hope to have opportunities to communicate through music and dance. I would also like to participate in volunteer activities and local events. I would like to meet and communicate with various people there. I would also like to spend American events (Christmas, Thanksgiving Day, etc.) and talk about daily life. Sharing something with all of you will make me feel warm. I hope my stay will make your days more interesting and enjoyable. I can't wait to meet you all soon, but I will do what I have to do now, one thing at a time, to enjoy my life with you. One year from now, I hope to meet you all in a more mature form and start my life as a study abroad student. I look forward to seeing you all next year.
Best,
Yu
