Here is how the pitot static system controls some of the flight instruments explained. A pitot static system blockage will produce altimeter errors and errors in the airspeed indicator and vertical speed indicator, depending on where the blockage occurs.
Also, flying into an area of different pressure or temperature can "confuse" the altimeter into indicating inaccurately. You can use the memory aid "high to low, look out below," to understand how the altimeter will respond to these changes in pressure or temperature.
