If you wanna tell better stories, use this psychology trick.
Expectations versus reality.
The second someone starts watching a video they build an expectation of what they think the video is gonna be about.
With YouTube videos and blogs, this happens before the click, based on the title.
With social media videos this happens in the first few seconds during the hook.
Now once the viewer forms an expectation, they make a guess as to what they think is coming next.
If the reality of what comes next is less interesting or the same as what they expected, they get bored and bounce.
But, if the reality is better, more interesting, more shocking, or more entertaining than their expectation, they’ll stay.
Storytelling really is this simple.
First, say something clear to anchor their expectations and make them guess.
And then, say something contrarian or nonobvious to shock or beat them
You continue this loop over and over until the story is completed.
For example, I might say something like…
This is the fastest way to grow your social media account to 100,000 followers.
And in your head, you’re trying to think about all the stuff you already know, making a guess of what I might say.
If I say something you already know, then you’re not gonna be interested and you’ll leave.
But if I say, “all you have to do is post this 1 type of format 1x per week and you’ll get there in 3 months guaranteed…well now you’re intrigued because this new reality was more compelling than your expectations.
It’s that simple…
Now what I just went through is 1 of the core 8 storytelling principles.
