EU fishing chiefs have erupted at chief negotiator Michel Barnier’s softening stance in the Brexit negotiations as he said the UK now “need to control their own waters”.
The move is seen as a softening from previous red lines set by the European Union after they were adamant, they wanted full and continued access to the UK’s fishing grounds. Something that would not give the UK full control of its waters.
Mr Barnier and UK counterpart Lord David Frost have been wrangling over the remaining issues of state aid, fisheries and the so called level playing field in Brussels after Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU chiefs such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron gave the green light to try and find common ground before the transition period deadline on December 31st and avoid a no deal Brexit.
Transcript:
THE EU has hinted it could be about to in Brexit talks as chief negotiator Michel Barnier admitted the UK needs to "control own waters" as trade talks are set to reach a moment today.
Mr Barnier said today the EU remained committed to achieving "a fair, reciprocal and balanced agreement" but said the UK should have control of its own waters. His comments came after a UK Government source warned that the negotiations would unless there was a "substantial shift" in the EU's position in the remaining days of the talks. The British side has the EU of making "unreasonable demands" by not over fishing rights and fair competition rules amid the end of the transition period ending on December 31st.
Mr Barnier appeared to be showing a sign of as he said the talks with the UK's chief negotiator Lord Frost were at a "moment", and added both sides need to have control of their own waters post- Brexit.
He tweeted: "Both the EU and the UK must have the right to set their own laws and control their own waters. And we should both be able to act when our interests are at stake."
His comments sparked responses from EU fishing chiefs who claim Mr Barnier has already given the UK too much by offering a return of 25 percent of the current EU quotas to British vessels.
The European Fisheries Alliance, which represents fleets from France, Belgium and the Netherlands, said: “The shape of a deal, as it currently stands would give a to the European seafood sector."
“In of repeated promises made, we are in the of being with the offer made to the United Kingdom by the European Commission."
French fisherman Pierre-Marc Caoloin told France24: "We spend 60 to 70 percent of our time fishing in British waters. If it's a hard Brexit, it is going to be really for us."
And another Frenchman Hugo LePretre added: "There are scores and scores of boats, ones from Belgium or Holland, and the local boats.
"The French waters are completely out. The little we haul in, we catch in British waters.
"And now they want to us from fishing there. What are we going to do? Honestly, we are."
However, the UK position has not moved on fisheries with one senior government source calling Mr Barnier’s latest offer “not even close” to a figure the UK would deem acceptable to secure a free trade agreement with the bloc.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson reiterated that he will not sign a deal the does not give the UK control over its fishing grounds and urged the EU to “see sense” that the UK would never accept this outcome.
Speaking to parliament earlier in the week Mr Johnson said: "Every hope I have, is that our friends and partners across the Channel will see sense and do a deal, and all that that takes is for them to understand that the UK has a natural right, like every other country, to want to be able to control its own laws and its own fishing grounds."
