In Memory of Les Reed

I was to sit down and finish a tribute to my dear friend, Les Reed for his book, on the same day that he suddenly left us. I’m stuck for words between all our yesterdays and now, without this humble and enormously talented and creative man, whom I have known since 1958. Our friendship was not always music, but it worked it's way into most everything we did...playing cards on the tour bus for hours, I think he started putting those black and white keys together in his head in a way that would soon become my musical stamp.
Thankfully, I was able to talk to his darling daughter Donna, just hours before he passed and went on to be with his beloved wife June.
This is a very emotional goodbye for so many. What a wonderful and genuine man he was, with magic in his fingertips and a tapestry of music woven into our lives. that came effortlessly from his imagination and delivered by the craft he had perfected.
He was so instrumental in the music that started my life and continued to bless it.
Every night, I dance across the stage, playing an imaginary piano with the arpeggio for "The Last Waltz"...that only he could play perfectly.
Our last tour of England opened with his beautiful “Our England.” written with Geoff Stephens.

It was always a treat to get a message from Les. He was such a gentleman and I treasure our friendship and all those saved emails and voicemails. He helped me more than most anyone....when I was at my lowest he pulled me up and dusted me off and did some charts for me without charging me. I got back on my feet and he was the first debt i paid. I owe him more than I could ever repay but the music is a daily reminder of his gift and a life well lived by a man well loved.

Rest easy dear Les....
