Thousands protest after Sudan military arrests prime minister, seizing power in apparent coup
Sudan's ruling council head Abdel Fattah al-Burhan announced on Monday the dissolution of the government, stating that the military will run the country after his forces arrested the acting prime minister and other officials.
Thousands flooded the streets of the capital Khartoum and its twin city of Omdurman to protest following the arrests. Footage appeared to show protesters blocking streets and setting fire to tires, as security forces used tear gas to disperse them.
At least 12 protesters were wounded in demonstrations, according to the Sudanese Doctors Committee, without giving details.
The Information Ministry, still loyal to the dissolved government, said Burhan’s speech was an “announcement of a seizure of power by military coup,” and called for resistance.
Sudan has been on edge since a failed coup plot last month unleashed recriminations between military and civilian groups sharing power, uneasily following the toppling of long-serving ruler Omar al-Bashir two years ago.
