Living With Keratoconus | Am I Going Blind?! | My Story

The doctor I see for keratoconus is Dr. William Ritzel at Belleville Optometry in Belleville, IL. He is very informed about the condition and super nice and helpful.

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the normally round cornea thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This cone shape deflects light as it enters the eye on its way to the light-sensitive retina, causing distorted vision.

I was diagnosed in my late 20’s but the symptoms started much earlier. One of the main symptoms is decreasing vision. Eyeglass prescriptions change yearly until your vision can not even be corrected with them.

I also forgot to mention that because my cornea is thin it can rip very easily. I had to stop sleeping in front of the fan because my eyes would dry out and my eyelid would rip the top layer of my cornea when I opened my eyes in the morning. Soooooo painful and it would take weeks to heal. I use gel lubricant eye drops every night to prevent damage to my cornea. #kerataconus #sclerallenses #blind
