Phosphine fumigation treatment | Rentokil
The fumigation of commodities like grains and food stuff (such as rice, cereals, dried fruits, nuts, cocoa beans and coffee beans) can be done by using Phosphine gas and is usually employed against pest insects, such as beetles, mites, moths and weevils.
The active ingredient is released from metallic phosphide compounds which react with water vapour in the atmosphere to liberate Phosphine gas.
Most food stuffs may be safely treated with this fumigant, which when applied at the correct dosage rate will not damage or taint the commodity being treated. It's penetrative qualities mean it is the fumigant of choice for treating 'grain' in storage and in transit aboard ship.
Sufficient time must be allowed for Phosphine to work effectively. The time 'under gas' is referred to as the 'exposure period' and for Phosphine this is unlikely to be less than 48 hours. Additionally time should be added to ventilate the commodity to ensure it is free from all traces of the fumigant. Once the commodity has been ventilated no toxic residues remain. When Phosphine tablets (or pellets) are used to fumigate grain, it needs to be cleaned to remove any non toxic residues that may remain. This is especially important when fumigating grain to ensure it maintains a clean passport.
Because no toxic residues remain in the commodity there is no residual protection, as a result fumigation should be considered as part of an overall 'integrated pest management' regime.
Rentokil employs and thoroughly trains a specialist team of fumigation operators. Each of whom must demonstrate their competence before being designated as an 'operator in charge' and by sitting annual stewardship training in the safe and effective use of the fumigant product.
