Ascertaining AI's Role in Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

In this special edition episode, CancerNetwork® spoke with Viviana Cortiana, MS4, medical student at the Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences at the University of Bologna, and Yan Leyfman, MD, a resident physician from the Icahn School of Medicine of the Mount Sinai Health System, both part of MedNews Week, regarding their most recent manuscript published in the March 2025 issue of Oncology titled, “Artificial Intelligence in Cancer Care: Addressing Challenges in Health Equity."

Cortiana began by highlighting the need for diverse data to prevent biased or inaccurate models, emphasizing the ability for artificial intelligence (AI) to democratize access to cancer care in low- and middle-income countries. Through mobile diagnostic frameworks and clinical decision support systems, cost-effective AI-powered tools can support patients in these regions.

Leyfman discussed considerations for the ethical deployment of AI-powered tools in cancer care, including data security, transparency, and clinical validation. Leyfman reiterated a need for diverse, representative datasets, with an emphasis on the inclusion of community health advocates in developing these models, as well as a focus on patient autonomy and ethical oversight. He concluded by identifying the potential for AI to aid in the early detection of cancers, precision oncology, and expediting clinical workflows.
