Cheek to Cheek (from "Top Hat") - Irving Berlin
#med (Music.Every.Day)
This is video 491 of my video posting project. I have been working on this project since November 2023--learning and posting a video of new piano music (almost) every day! (I'm counting videos instead of days now!)
Today's piece is from a new (to me) collection: "Cheek to Cheek" from the movie "Top Hat" - written by Irving Berlin.
The arrangement can be found in Hal Leonard's collection called Jazz Piano Solos: Cocktail Piano. The arrangements are written by Brent Edstrom.
This collection has some lovely jazz standards that are arranged in a jazz style with lots of wonderful right hand "noodling" and flourishes. A fun new challenge for me!
Irving Berlin fun fact: He could only play in the key of F sharp! (A key with six sharps which most pianists hate). He apparently had a lever on his piano that could change the key for him... Imagine what he could do now with a transposing button lol. I love his music, I love that it is upbeat and cheerful. I'm thankful that when he wrote out his sheet music, it wasn't in the key of F#!
I remember seeing the movie Top Hat, and I also remember listening to Ella Fitzgerald's wonderful rendition of this classic song. Brent Edstrom's arrangement is fun to play--very bouncy, fun rhythms that just make the melody swing and sing!
Tune in tomorrow for more of my #music.every.day experiment!
