Hello dear delay and synth fans and lovers,

here´s another shootout video for you all!

This lovely delay pedals selection had been already covered in detail in my other video except for ONE - and that is Universal Audio Starlight Echo Station. So let´s take a closer look.

Well, this unit is pretty spectacular and definately has what I would call a premium looks, build and sound quality but did I keep it for my own delay collection? Sorry to say it but I actually did not.

I think it is pretty clear when listening back to this demo that UA box has a more solid, more cleaner, more spacier, more hotter and more balanced signal than practically any of the other delay pedals in this shootout. It has a lovely vintage style design on the outside and a very nice control surface that is pleasure to use with no hidden menus or parameters, offers three distinctive delay modes (Analog, Digital and Tape), is super easy to get a great sound from, has a stereo capability, tap tempo, basically everything you can possibly ask for in an ultimate delay pedal. Really all is just perfect and the box itself works like a charm, Certainly one of the best delay boxes you could ever lay your hands on.

So why is it that I do not favour this unit over the others? Well, I guess something specific about the sound that did not make me feel happy. It is hard to explain and is maybe just my gut feeling that I trust for no reason but I cannot tell you exactly why I feel that way. Please don´t get me wrong, this unit is phenomenal and most users out there will confirm that without a shade of doubt. It´s fair to note that I am neither guitarist nor an experienced guitar pedal user and only tested the pedal with a synth the fact of which may or may not have an impact on my own opinion and statement.

No matter how perfect everything looks and sounds inside out there is still something inside of me thinking this cannot not be true. Is there some sort of a magic hidden in this box? How can it be so flawless and perfect in every way? And then I realized what propably made me feel different about this box. I would not call it fake but I would maybe use the word „software perfect“ instead. It is too calculated, too predictable, too polished and shiny in its sound presentation and this absurd perfection is what did not gel well with me. Sorry. It felt like a top dollar delay plugin which it basially is and nothing wrong with that but somehow I just cannot seem to get away from that „plugin“ feeling when using it or hearing it as opposed to a much more natural, organic, vibrant nature of some other (and still chip-based digital) delay pedals I have had the luck of using, testing and owning. I feel really split on this Universal Audio pedal and still cannot decide whether I miss it or not. It is so wonderful when I think of it and Starlight could easily be your end-game delay pedal for every application imaginable stage or studio but also it is a little off putting with that weird taste of the „plugin“ behaviour and feel. Hard one to make up my mind on but still an amazing delay pedal nontheless:-)

Please reassure me that I have not gone mad or hear things that are not really there, I might be possesed by an EHX pedal God or something, so please don´t judge me if my opinion does not meet yours at all. It´s a just one silly man´s subjective evaluation of a product that probably has no real relevance to anyone but myself:-)
