In US news and current events today, here's everything you need to know about the suspected Russia hack. A massive cybersecurity breach was detected in early December, with many officials & experts attributing the attack to Russia. A network-monitoring software from the tech company SolarWinds was reportedly compromised in March. An update to the software contained a backdoor allowing hackers to access & monitor systems using the software. SolarWinds says about 18,000 of its clients downloaded the corrupted software, including many Fortune 500 companies & some government agencies. So far, at least 200 organizations have been identified as victims of hacking. That includes at least 6 U.S. government agencies: Department of Commerce, Department of the Treasury, Department of State, Department of Homeland Security, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, and the Nat’l Nuclear Security Admin. Though it is unclear what and how much information was stolen or compromised, the gov’t’s cybersecurity agency has called the attack ‘a grave risk’ to the U.S.. The agency also says there’s evidence of additional ‘access vectors,’ meaning hackers could have access even without the SolarWinds software. Cybersecurity experts & gov’t officials have said Russia is likely to blame. Russia has denied involvement. Trump has sought to defend Russia & has blamed China instead. Trump has publicly defended Russia repeatedly while in office. U.S. intelligence reports claimed Russia had offered bounties for attacks on U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Trump rejected the intel this summer, calling it ‘fake news.’ Trump also questioned the conclusion of the intel community that Russia had interfered in the 2016 election. Lawmakers have since been briefed on the issue, but accuse administration officials of withholding information. A defense bill passed by Congress in December includes provisions to strengthen cybersecurity defenses in the U.S.. Trump has threatened to veto the bill.
