Diving for abalone in Victoria? Make sure you know the rules before you go.

Abalone are one of Victoria’s most iconic and tightly managed fisheries. In this video, our fisheries officer, Eric, explains the key things recreational divers should understand before collecting abalone.

🎣 Before you head out, it’s important to be aware of:

• Minimum legal size requirements
• Daily bag and possession limits
• Area and seasonal closures
• Approved collection methods and equipment
• Where and when abalone can be taken
• Measuring your catch correctly
• Rules around transporting and shucking abalone

Abalone are also extremely delicate animals, so responsible collection methods are essential to ensure undersized abalone can be returned safely to the water.

⚠️ Diving safety is also critical.

Always dive with a buddy, use a dive flag to let others know where you are, and only enter the water when sea conditions are safe.
