Country music's first platinum album wasn't a masterwork. It was an inventory solution — and it accidentally rewrote the business model of an entire industry.

In 1976, Jerry Bradley at RCA Nashville needed to move product. He had a vault full of recordings from Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson — artists who had just won their creative control battles, meaning their pre-deal masters were still RCA's property. He packaged them with Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser, added one freshly recorded duet, put four faces on a wanted poster, and shipped it on January 12, 1976.

What happened next, nobody predicted. FM rock stations that had never played country started spinning it. The audience that Nashville didn't know it had showed up in platinum numbers. And the entire label system — creative control, advances, royalty rates, radio programming — began a permanent shift it never reversed.

The full story, including the three specific industry reckonings the platinum certification triggered, the Tompall Glaser history that everyone left out, and how this album's logic is playing out again in the streaming era — it's all on the Classic Country TV Journal.
