I've talked about how overvalued the stock market (sp500) is in past videos. In this video I want to talk about a different perspective. Instead of focusing on how much the stock market will crash, let's look at the estimated future returns over the next 10 years. According to John Hussman, who is a very known for his valuation work, you should expect a negative return over the next 10 years based on today's prices. That means the S&P 500 will be LOWER in 10 years than it is TODAY. This is the worst risk to return in the past 100 years... worse than right before the great depression, and right before the .com stock market bubble. This is something important to know if you plan on holding stocks for the next 10 years. For everyone who enjoyed the most recent bull market, we are likely to see a decade of sideways movement for the stock market.

So where would I buy the S&P 500? I value the sp500 index based on it's average p/e ratio, which is around 16. Right now the p/e ratio is over 28, almost double the normal valuation. I would have to wait for a stock market crash for the sp500 to get to 2400 before I would feel comfortable buying it. That being said of course stocks can keep going up in the short term, over the next 2-3 years I don't know what will happen, but if you are planning to hold stocks for the next 10 years just keep in mind that future returns won't be that great.
