Kant said you must never lie. Not even to a murderer at your door asking where your friend is hiding.

He meant it literally. In an 1797 essay he argued that if a killer asks where your friend is, you must tell the truth. The killer's actions are his responsibility. Yours is to be honest.

Kant had a system. The categorical imperative. Act only on maxims you could will to be universal laws. If lying were universal, language would collapse. Therefore, never lie. Ever.

It was beautiful logic. It was useless ethics.

A philosophy that breaks the first time you actually need it is not a philosophy. It is a thought experiment that mistook itself for a survival guide. Kant's framework collapsed the moment it touched a hidden Jew in 1940, a battered spouse in a shelter, a soldier in an interrogation cell.

Real moral judgement is not a formula. It weighs context. Who is asking. What is at stake. Whether telling the truth honours a person or hands them over.

The Bonhoeffers and the Bernard Williamses spent the next two centuries cleaning up the mess Kant left.
