"The Dark Artery": Bill Nighy on coal, mining, and communities

The film Pride was as much about coal mining communities' pride in what they did as it was about the ties between the gay liberation struggle and the 84-85 miners' strike. This clip is a solid rejoinder to those greens who want to do away with mining and think doing so would be a service to the workers. No miner would tell you that mining is evil. The bosses though, now they're another story.

“Here, are the stiffening hills, here, the rich cargo
Congealed in the dark arteries,
Old veins
That hold Glamorgan's blood.
The midnight miner in the secret seams,
Limb, life, and bread.

- Rhondda Valley”
