Belfast Knife Attack: Suspect Charged With Attempted Murder As Anti-Immigration Protests Feared

A man arrested following the Belfast stabbing has been charged with attempted murder, Belfast Magistrates' Court has heard. The 30-year-old Sudanese man also faces charges of possession of a bladed article in a public place and making threats to kill.

The victim – a man in his 40s – remains in a serious condition in hospital, suffering serious wounds to his eye, face and back.

The attack, which took place in the Kinnaird Avenue area of north Belfast near the Antrim Road, was captured on video and sparked widespread condemnation. Political leaders and senior police officers have appealed for calm amid fears that anti-immigration protests planned across Northern Ireland could turn violent.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) say there is no indication the attack was terror-related. The PSNI has launched a critical incident investigation.
