Elvis Presley - Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues - From First Take to the Master

Recorded at Stax Recording Studios in Memphis on 13 December 1973, 'Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues' was first released on the 1974 album 'Good Times'. Despite being no more than an obscure album track it is a favourite with many Elvis fans, and this song with it's haunting narrative and wonderful vocal by Elvis, deserves to be more widely known.
For whatever reason, Elvis chose to omit a verse which may have been a bit close to home, this verse read :
“I got my pills to ease the pain
Can't find a thing to ease the rain
I'd love to try and settle down
But everybody's leavin' town”
For Elvis' eleventh Las Vegas season beginning on 19 August 1974, he decided to go for a complete revamp of his set list which included dropping the 2001 theme, See See Rider and I Got a Woman / Amen. The show now had a low key opening with Big Boss Man, Proud Mary before 'Down In The Alley' and 'Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues', neither of which would be performed live again and these were followed by the last live performance of 'Never Been To Spain'.
