Australia Cuts Fuel Tax By Half To Ease Pressure On Families

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has warned that the economic impact of the Middle East war could last for months, with rising fuel prices expected to continue affecting households, businesses and supply chains across the country.
Albanese urged Australians not to panic-buy petrol and encouraged people to use public transport where possible to help reduce pressure on fuel supplies. He said the war had caused one of the biggest spikes in petrol and diesel prices in history and warned that “the months ahead may not be easy.”
To ease the pressure, the Australian government is temporarily halving fuel taxes for three months, cutting around 26 cents from the cost of each litre of petrol and diesel. Canberra is also removing heavy vehicle road charges and increasing fuel reserves to keep supply chains moving.
Australia imports about 90 percent of its fuel, making it especially vulnerable to disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. Albanese said the government would do everything possible to protect Australians from the fallout while urging the public to conserve fuel and avoid unnecessary travel.
The measures come as Australia faces growing concerns over inflation, supply shortages and the possibility of wider economic disruption if the war continues. Officials have already warned that further restrictions on fuel use may become necessary if conditions worsen.
