R142A 6 train ride: The immense temporary return of the new technology train
Seen here is a ride on a 6 train, operated by R142A, round trip along Lexington Avenue making local stops to and from 149 Street-Grand Concourse via City Hall loop.
Due to electrical work, 6 train service was split into two sections:
1. Pelham Bay Park and 125 Street, running express from Hunts Point Avenue to 3rd Avenue-138 Street.
2. Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and 149 Street-Grand Concourse via 4 line, uptown bypassing 138 Street-Grand Concourse.
Passengers who needed to continue service into the Bronx would change at 125 Street to a Bronx bound 6 train.
In this video, I managed to catch me an R142A, running on the 6, since its loaned from Jerome Yard due to subway car shortage of R62As needed for SMS treatment, making local stops along Lexington Avenue. R142As ran on the 6 from 2000 until 2018 when most of the R142As were converted into R188s, and were transferred to the 7 line for CBTC, thus sending R62As from there to the 6 line for the remainder of service, with the rest of the R142As were sent to the 4. The R142As would only run on the 6 if and only if there was shortage due to cut off for weekend service, and loaners from the 4 would be sent to the 6 to rely on extra service. I managed to catch this R142A coming from the relay north of 149 Street-Grand Concourse and start service downtown to Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall. Although this whole set was dirty, there was so much garbage in the entire that it hasn't been maintainence before going into service, but they had no car cleaners at 149 Street-Grand Concourse, and this had to run through downtown just like that. I managed to stay on here, riding through the loop to the uptown platform so that it would go back into service from there, with all the garbage that is still on there, making all local stops as per usual, bypassing 138 Street-Grand Concourse. As we got to 149 Street- Grand Concourse, it went to relay north of there so that it can go back downtown, back to Brooklyn Bridge.
In the end, I caught one last clip of it leaving from the Manhattan bound platform, as it went back into service and headed downtown to Manhattan from there. I guess they'll keep it in service until 11 PM when they finally can take it out of service for maintainence.
Enjoy!
