001 - Hand assembly and frying pan reflow
Hand assembly of an SMD demonstration fixture from Texas Instruments, the DEM-OPA-SO-1A. I use a small dab of Chipquik paste on each pad - it is critical that this is kept in the fridge but warmed up to room temperature before use. A decent pair of anti-magnetic tweezers help greatly.
After all parts have been placed I use an old solid frying pan (or skillet) and heat rapidly over a high temperature gas hob.
I added a OPA684 and resistors/capacitors to make it work with a single supply. This video is designed to demonstrate the method I use, rather than the actual PCB. I have used the same technique with more complicated boards and it is great for prototype work.
The board is designed for 1206 parts and I only had 0805, so some did not reflow correctly. This is fairly easy to rectify with an iron afterward.
