Location: Highway 162, outside Willows, Northern California

James Vogel took the overnight shift because it paid a little more, and because nothing was supposed to happen between 11 PM and 7 AM in the middle of nowhere. But when he pulls into the gravel lot behind the station, he sees someone already inside. A man behind the register wearing his black hoodie, his baseball cap, his posture, and his face. Before James ever unlocks the door, the other version of him clocks in first.

What follows turns a lonely gas station shift into grounded procedural time-loop horror, where the scanner records impossible entries, the cameras show footage that should not exist, and every empty aisle feels like James is one step behind someone wearing his life. A stockroom door, a security monitor, a second clock-in, an idling car, and two identical sets of keys become pieces of something much worse than a double. In “The Missing Shift,” the horror is not that James sees another version of himself. It is that he may have been switching places with him all along.
