Elvis Presley - Walk a Mile a Mile In My Shoes - The Live Comparison Series - Volume Sixty Six

Walk a Mile In My Shoes – Live Comparison Series #66
In much the same way as "Just Pretend", it always seems to be overlooked that Elvis performed "Walk a Mile In My Shoes" during his 12 August 1970 midnight show. As the version from twenty four hours previously opened 1992's "The Lost Performances" this is the version that everyone remembers. This version is still as good but on this occasion Elvis does not precede the song with "Men of Broken Hearts".
Written by Joe South, 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes' is a song which concerns racial tolerance and the need for perspective and compassion. It would be one of ten songs which Elvis would introduce to his setlist during the opening show of his second Las Vegas season on 26 January 1970. He would continue to sing the song throughout this season and at all six shows at the Houston Astrodome at the conclusion of this January / February 1970 Las Vegas season.
After Houston, Elvis would perform the song live just three more times and all on consecutive midnight shows in Las Vegas. These three performances would be on consecutive midnight shows from 11 to 13 August, and the first two would be in front of MGM's cameras, and the last at the first show immediately after main filming for That's The Way It Is had ceased.
The August 1970 versions would all be abbreviated versions, as the middle verse would be inexplicably be omitted. The other main difference was that whilst the Jan/Feb versions was segued into a medley with 'In The Ghetto', which tied two songs with a similar theme together. In August 1970 the only performance of 'In The Ghetto' would have 'Don't Cry Daddy' in place of 'Walk A Mile In My Shoes'.

All Versions except recorded 1970 in The International Hotel’s Main Showroom, Las Vegas

00:00 Version One – 26 January, Opening Dhow – The First Live Rendition
03:00 Version Two – 3 February Dinner Show
05:53 Version Three – 15 February Dinner Show
08:47 Version Four – 16 February 1970 Dinner Show
11:40 Version Five – 17 February 1970 Dinner Show
14:34 Version Six - 17 February 1970 Midnight Show
17:26 Version Seven – 18 February 1970 Dinner Show
An unusual version for this engagement in that it is an abridged version missing the middle verse.

19:34 Version Eight - 18 February 1970 Midnight Show
The first of two recorded versions which is not segued in a medley with “In The Ghetto”.

22:32 Version Nine - 19 February 1970 Dinner Show
25:28 Version Ten - 19 February 1970 Midnight Show
This is the undubbed version of the RCA live master which was originally released on the “On Stage – February 1970” album. Before release, additional female backing vocals by Millie Kirkham, Mary and Ginger Holladay, Mary “Jeanie” Green and Sandra Posey Robinson were recorded and added on 1 April 1970. These overdub recordings took place at RCA Studio A in Nashville under the supervision of Elvis’ own producer, Felton Jarvis.

28:20 Version Eleven - 20 February 1970 Dinner Show
The second recorded and one of the few versions from this engagement not segued in a medley with “In The Ghetto”.

31:08 Version Twelve - 20 February 1970 Midnight Show
34:08 Version Thirteen – 21 February 1970 Midnight Show
37:01 Version Fourteen - 22 February 1970 Dinner Show
40:06 Version Fifteen - 23 February 1970 Dinner Show
42:57 Version Sixteen - 1 March 1970, Evening Show – The Houston Astrodome
45:08 Version Seventeen - 11 August 1970 Midnight Show
This is the version that was first seen in The Lost Performances in 1992 and is preceded by Elvis’ recital of the poem “Men With Broken Hearts”. This version and the following version from twenty four hours later are only abridged versions, missing the middle verse and therefore seem too short. In essence, it seems that the August 1970 versions are over before they have even begun, they are however, excellent versions leaving the listener wanting more.

47:49 Version Eighteen - 12 February 1970 Midnight Show
As with all of these videos, to get the most out of the re-edited audio, I highly recommend you use ear /headphones and turn the volume up as much as you dare!
