INS Vikrant: The Pride of India's Naval Power INS Vikrant is India's first indigenously built aircraft carrier and a symbol of the country's growing defence and technological strength. Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 2 September 2022, the massive warship was built by Cochin Shipyard Limited under the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC-1) project. The 262-metre-long carrier weighs around 43,000 tonnes, can sail at speeds of about 28 knots (over 50 km/h), and can carry fighter jets and helicopters including MiG-29K aircraft and multi-role helicopters. With more than 2,300 compartments and a crew of around 1,600-1,700 personnel, INS Vikrant plays a key role in protecting India's maritime interests in the Indian Ocean. The name "Vikrant" means "courageous", and it continues the legacy of India's first aircraft carrier, the original INS Vikrant, which played a decisive role in the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, helping India secure victory and the creation of Bangladesh.
