SIR EDMUND HILLARY DOCUMENTARY FILM "I ALWAYS COME BACK TO THE HIMALAYAS" TIBET 47154

Produced in 1965 with backing by Sears Roebuck (which apparently hoped to sell camping equipment) and the co-operation of Sir Edmund Hillary and his first wife Louise Mary Rose, "I Always Come Back to the Himalayas" is a rarely-seen documentary about the famed climber. The film takes the viewer on a journey with Hillary across several continents and shows a rarely-seen part of his life as a father and husband who brought his whole clan along on his incredible adventures. Tragically, roughly ten years after the film's release, his wife Louise and daughter Belinda (who is seen in the film as a youngster) were killed in a plane crash near Kathmandu airport. They had been en route to join Hillary in the village of Phaphlu, where he was helping to build a hospital.

The film begins in Alaska, where the Hilary family camps near the Matanuska Glacier. The family revels in the unpolluted air, the beautiful wild flowers and the stunning landscapes. The long 20 hours of sunlight during summer produced enormous vegetables. As Hillary recounts, 1956 saw his first trip to the Antarctic led by Dr. Vivian Fuchs, and despite enjoying every adventure, Hillary states in voice over; “Each expedition is a separate adventure, and each location has an attraction of its own - but I always come back to the Himalayas”. And of course, Mount Everest.

Situated north of India and on the border between Nepal and Tibet, the Himalayas provide superb trekking, campsites and beautiful flowers. But one of the main attractions are the people and the things they do, especially the Sherpas. In 1961 the first elementary school was built for the Sherpas in Kunjun. The Hillary family are seen being greeted warmly by the whole community when they visit. Ed also assisted in the construction of a hospital and classroom; a bridge strong enough to withstand the monsoon; a pipe providing clean water to a monastery; reconstruction of a terrace at another monastery near the Tibetan border. The terrace is completed in time for the biggest celebration of the year, Mani Rimdu. For the occasion the villagers lay on a special lunch for Ed and his wife. The boy Lama presents the couple with scarves of honor before he takes his seat and the official program of celebration begins. The blow of the trumpets signals the end of the two day festival, and the beginning of a new year for the Sherpas.

Sir Edmund Percival "Ed" Hillary KG ONZ KBE (20 July 1919 – 11 January 2008) was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest. They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. Hillary was named by Time as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.

Hillary became interested in mountaineering while in secondary school, making his first major climb in 1939, reaching the summit of Mount Ollivier. He served in the Royal New Zealand Air Force as a navigator during World War II. Prior to the 1953 Everest expedition, Hillary had been part of the British reconnaissance expedition to the mountain in 1951, as well as an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. As part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition he reached the South Pole overland in 1958. He subsequently reached the North Pole, making him the first person to reach both poles and summit Everest.

Following his ascent of Everest, Hillary devoted most of his life to helping the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. Through his efforts, many schools and hospitals were built in Nepal.
