Elections and the use of online political advertising - (Geo)politics of digital authoritarianism

Data-driven campaigning and micro-targeting have transformed how political actors reach voters – but at what cost to democratic integrity? Enea Fiore (Laval University & University of Torino) discusses the rise of digital political advertising in Europe, exploring how personalised messaging and unregulated online spaces fuel disinformation, polarisation, and manipulation. Drawing on lessons from Cambridge Analytica, Brexit, and the 2016 US election, he assesses the regulatory frameworks now emerging in Europe and explains why right-wing populist parties continue to dominate social media spending even under increasingly restrictive legal regimes.
