The Big Bang was Hublot's big bang in the watch industry that catapulted them into a legendary brand (thanks to Jean-Claude Biver)...BUT Hublot isn't typically "legendary" to a watch LOVER at all. If you're deep into this little hobby of ours you probably love Rolex, Omega, Grand Seiko, Patek Phillpe, and AP (among many, many others) but WHY is Hublot not only loved, but in fact despised by many?

I won't give away the meat and potatoes of this video but one of the biggest thing is Hublot's movements. Their UNICO movement is incredible BUT that certainly does not make up for all of their other Sellita based movements and the premium they still charge for them.

Also, let's just ignore the fact that it kinda seems like Michael really likes the classic fusion. FUSION!

Today, Michael dives into exactly why it is that Hublot gets such a hard time from watch geeks!

We're gonna assess this subject in three parts:

1) Hublot's achievements and contributions to horology - While AP and Patek had their steel Genta sports watch heavyweights with the Royal Oak and Nautilus, respectively, Hublot saw an opportunity to do something different. That something different was to take the base concept of those watches, being industrial designed steel sport models, and swap out the integrated bracelets for an integrated natural rubber strap. Not a game changer, but it helped give those original Hublot models a bit of their own identity. However, it was the infamous Jean Claude Biver who stepped in and highlighted that the brand's main success is in their ability to fuse materials, to literally create a fusion on the wrist. FUSION! Anyway, now they have a watch with literal concrete on it, so that's nifty.

2) Why everyone hates Hublot - All of the above is fine, so what isn't fine? The movements, for starters. While they do have their own, relatively prestigious in-house movement with the UNICO, many of their watches are powered by base Sellita movements which can be had in watches costing a 10th of the price. There's also the issue of market, wherein a lot of the time Hublot is seen as a brand that is functionally used by people as a sign of how much money they've spent on their watch.

3) Can they ever become not hated? - Probably not, at least not among the watch community, unless they take some dramatic steps to adjust their pricing model which, if we're being real, probably isn't going to happen any time soon.
