Lesson 5 – Who invented the Tibetan alphabet? | བོད་སྐད་ཐོག་ཐོག་ — Tibetan Tidbits

Welcome to Tibetan Tidbits, our Tibetan language course!

📖 In this lesson: We explore the story of how the Tibetan alphabet was created in the 7th century. King Songtsen Gampo sent his minister Thonmi Sambhota to India to design a script for translating Buddhist texts. Inspired by Sanskrit writing systems, Sambhota brought back the Tibetan script—still in use today.

We’ll also look at:

How Tibetan script resembles South and Southeast Asian alphabets.

The special letters created for Sanskrit loanwords.

The possibility of earlier writing in Tibet.

🌏 In the following videos, we’ll continue exploring the Tibetan language along with its history and culture.
👤 About me: I am a professional Tibetologist and novice video creator, excited to share my knowledge with a wider audience.
