From Alaska to Texas: Dan Ketchum's 30-Year EMS Journey

Williamson County EMS Commander Dan Ketchum shares how he entered EMS in 1995 in Wasilla, Alaska after seeing wrecks as a civilian, took an EMT class, and volunteered with a paid-on-call ambulance service before advancing to EMT Intermediate. After moving to Texas, he attended Temple College’s early paramedic program taught by Jeff Jarvis and later spent about seven years as a field paramedic before promoting to lieutenant, then served six to seven more years before becoming commander. Ketchum discusses the communication and discipline challenges of moving into supervision, learning through county classes, continuing education, and trial and error, and advises future leaders to gain experience and pursue leadership training. He describes a vision for expanded community paramedicine, considers AI-generated EMS narratives for documentation and billing, encourages focus on active shooter preparedness, and emphasizes mentorship and proactive, confident patient interaction.
