In today’s Explained, we take a look at how new Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel can turn around the fortunes at Stamford Bridge following the sacking of Frank Lampard.

The German coach is the 14th managerial appointment of Roman Abramovich’s 17-and-a-half year tenure as owner at Stamford Bridge. Having taken PSG to their first Champions League final in 2020, Tuchel has the kind of pedigree that Abramovich likes, and has the task of quickly improving performances and results on the field, gaining Champions League qualification and getting the best out of the big money signings the club made in 2020. But how will he go about his job at Stamford Bridge, and does he have what it takes to turn around fortunes in West London?

His tactical flexibility will be a welcome departure from more stubborn managers in the past like Sarri and Conte, taking inspiration in equal measure from Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. He also has an excellent track record with young players, with Christian Pulisic one of his prodigies at Dortmund – good news for Mason Mount and Reece James – while his management of superstars like Kylian MBappé and Neymar has been commended too.
